How we calculate
We calculate volume from the area and depth you enter, then convert it to cubic yards or cubic metres. Weight is estimated by multiplying that volume by a typical density for the soil type you picked. Volumes are rounded up to the nearest 0.1 cubic yard.
Tip: Soil settles once watered in — order about 10% extra if you need a finished level with the surrounding ground.

How deep should topsoil be?
4–6 in (10–15 cm) suits general planting beds and lawn preparation. Vegetable beds and raised beds want 12 in (30 cm) or more so roots have room.
How much does a cubic yard of topsoil weigh?
Screened topsoil weighs roughly 1.0–1.3 US tons (about 1 tonne) per cubic yard when moderately dry. Wet or clay-heavy soil can be 20% heavier.
Bulk delivery or bags?
Bulk bags hold about 0.7 m³ (near one cubic yard). Below two cubic yards bags are convenient; above that, loose delivery is normally cheaper per unit.
Do I need topsoil or compost?
Topsoil provides structure and bulk. Compost adds nutrients and organic matter but breaks down. For a new bed, a blend of roughly 70% topsoil and 30% compost works well.
Can I use topsoil to level a lawn?
Yes, but apply it thinly — no more than about 0.5 in (1 cm) at a time so the grass can grow through. Repeat over several seasons for bigger dips.
